Petaluma chickens feed contains no antibiotics, while conventional growers use antibiotics to
stimulate growth. And since chickens taste like what they eat, the vegetarian diet at Petaluma
consists of corn and soybean meal. Conventional feed contains animal fat and animal by products.
Chickens roam freely throughout their barns; the earth floor is covered with a layer if rice hulls,
which is natural bedding. They grow from day one to maturity in spacious poultry houses that
have natural daylight, which helps create a stress free environment The chickens receive humane
treatment at all times during their lives and ranchers use sustainable farming methods to protect
and enhance the environment.
Sustainable farming practices, and so much more, distinguish these chickens from those raised
conventionally in this country. While each brand (Rosie, Rocky and Rocky Jr.) is distinct, the three
birds share the following characteristics:
Rosie
Rosie was the first chicken in the United States to carry a certified organic label. Rosie's diet
consists of 100% certified organic corn and soybean grown on soil that has been free of pesticides,
herbicides and chemical fertilizers for at least three years. Petaluma Poultry raises Rosie in
accordance with the organic protocols independently verified by Oregon Tilth, a third party
certifier. Oregon Tilth visits the poultry houses, feed mill and processing plant to confirm that
organic practices are followed at all times. Rosie is a free-range chicken, allowed to run and forage
outdoors in an open-air, fenced area outside the barn. Rosie's weight averages 4 pounds.
Rocky the Range Chicken
Rocky was the first USDA approved free-range chicken. A premium roasting bird averaging 5 pounds, Rocky has access to fenced yards where the birds are free to roam in the open air and forage through the native grasses.
Rocky Jr. Natural Chicken
A premium quality broiler or fryer, Rocky Jr. is a younger bird weighing 3.5pounds on average. The birds roam in the spacious grow-out houses. They do not range outside because they are young and only partially feathered.
